In order to assist countries to achieve the WHO global standards for healthcare, The Union has designed a series of courses that address challenges faced by national programme managers and healthcare administrators in limited-resource settings. The courses focus on developing essential skills crucial for managing international healthcare programmes such as project management, budget development and administration, developing successful leadership techniques, and managing human resources. Each of the four courses is part of an entire management educational process that follows a natural progression in management training.
The Union courses are developed by experts with strong academic and business backgrounds, as well as extensive field experience in healthcare throughout the developing world. Teaching methods include not only lectures and presentations, but also self-assessments, case studies, simulations, role playing, team projects, and field visits. Each participant develops a year-long action plan before the conclusion of the course, afterward, a designated Union coach provides follow-up assistance to support implementation.
Union courses function in three stages to easier facilitate learning and assessment. Beginning with a conceptual approach, participants are introduced to various models, tools, and concepts that provide a foundation upon which to build before moving on to contextual practice. In this second stage, participants review real-world situations and apply them to each participant’s experience through group and individual exercises. During the third stage, students are instructed on how to design a tailor-made strategy for their respective public health programmes that will help produce measurable and beneficial results.
Courses are offered in English, French, and Spanish. Select courses are also translated into Mandarin and Russian.
